In contrast with the gleaming modern skyscraper hotels that surround it, Else Kuala Lumpur makes its home in a much more interesting place: the 1930s Art Deco Lee Rubber Building, right in the heart of Chinatown, in the old city center. Inside, however, you’ll find that, despite its historical bona fides, Else is no Art Deco period piece, but rather a high-end boutique hotel in a soothingly minimalistic modern style.

It’s more urban resort than city business hotel, and its rooms and suites feel suitably warm and organic. Room categories come with names like Mantra and Sanctuary, further evidence of the focus on tranquility. And yet right outside is Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, filled not only with markets and food halls but with chic retailers and a community of young creative professionals.

Within the hotel, however, the urban-resort atmosphere prevails. There’s an outdoor pool surrounded by cabanas and sensory deprivation pods, as well as a “boutique gym.” And while there’s no shortage of dining and drinking options in the surrounding neighborhood, Else Kuala Lumpur comes equipped with a few of its own, including the casual-chic Raw Kitchen Hall and a high-end Malaysian restaurant called Yellow Fin Horse.
